Ford Bronco vs. Ford Bronco Sport: Compare Ford's Adventure-Ready SUVs in Flemington

Three years into the Ford Bronco's highly anticipated return, the legendary 4x4 has proven the hype was more than warranted. Sporting a retro-inspired aesthetic, comfortable and well-equipped accommodations, and an array of advanced off-road attributes, the Car and Driver 10Best recipient has assumed its rightful position as the car industry's standard-setting trail-tackler. But what if you like the Bronco's nostalgic styling and adventurous character but want something more affordable and maneuverable for everyday driving? Enter its smaller sibling, the Bronco Sport.

While the Bronco SUV is the clear choice for seasoned enthusiasts seeking to maximize their off-road prospects, the Bronco Sport crossover is more capable than you might expect. To help you get an idea of which model is best suited to your Hillsborough lifestyle, here's a quick look at some important distinguishing characteristics.

Dimensions

The Bronco Sport is a crossover utility vehicle between the subcompact and compact segments, measuring 172.7" long, 74.3" wide, and 70.2" tall. A car-like unibody platform makes the Bronco Sport more comfortable and maneuverable on paved roads. And its shorter length and slimmer width make it a great choice for Princeton shoppers seeking an ultra-versatile crossover with city-friendly space requirements. However, despite its diminutive exterior, the Bronco Sport makes excellent use of its interior space and offers one of the roomiest cabins in its class. The Bronco Sport provides 32.5 cubic feet for cargo behind the second row and 65.2 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

The Ford Bronco is a midsize, body-frame SUV measuring 189.4" long, 75.9" wide, and 73" tall, leveraging its larger dimensions to provide even roomier seating and cargo accommodations. Four-door Bronco models have 38.3 cubic feet behind the second row and 83 cubes behind the first. While the Bronco has a significant advantage beyond the asphalt, it's not as nimble as its smaller sibling.

Powertrain Options

Most Ford Bronco Sport models are set in motion by a 1.5-liter turbo-three EcoBoost® engine making 181 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque, with an eight-speed automatic transmission handling the gear changes. The most capable Bronco Sport trim, Badlands, upgrades to a 2.0-liter turbo-four (250 hp, 277 lb-ft) and an advanced 4x4 system with a Twin-Clutch Rear Drive Unit.

The Ford Bronco is powered by a 2.3-liter EcoBoost® engine sending 300 horsepower and 325 pound-feet of torque to the wheels through a standard, class-exclusive seven-speed manual transmission. Or you can option the quick and precise 10-speed automatic. The Bronco's standard drivetrain is an Electronic Shift-on-the-Fly part-time 4x4 system with a 2-speed transfer case. A 2.7-liter twin-turbo V-6 (330 hp, 415 lb-ft) is standard for Wildtrak and available for all other models.

Capability

While the Bronco gets most of the attention from "serious" off-roaders, the Bronco Sport's capabilities are often overlooked due to its unibody crossover platform. All models come standard with at least five G.O.A.T. modes to help drivers of all experience levels Go Over All types of Terrain. However, to get the most out of the Bronco Sports potential, you'll want the Badlands trim. In addition to a more powerful engine and an advanced 4x4 system, Badlands models get off-road suspension, Pirelli (or optional Falken Wildpeak) all-terrain tires, bash plates, tow hooks, a 180-degree front trail camera, a special off-road cruise control feature (Ford Trail Control), and two additional G.O.A.T. modes (Mud/Ruts, Rock Crawl).

The Bronco Sport can venture where most in its class can't. However, for the most challenging and technical terrain, the truck-based, body-on-frame Bronco is in a league of its own. Purpose-built for out-of-bounds adventures, the Ford Bronco boasts a comprehensive array of terrain-conquering attributes, including potent powerplant options, off-road-tuned transmissions, and equipment like:

  • High-speed Off-road Suspension Systems (H.O.S.S.) 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0
  • Electronic Front-and Rear-Locking Differentials
  • Dana™ AdvanTEK® M210 front and M220 rear axles with electronic lockers
  • Front stabilizer bar disconnect
  • Up to 8 G.O.A.T. modes
  • Removable roof and doors
  • Available Trail Turn Assist, Ford Trail Control, and Trail 1-Pedal Drive

Features and Tech

The Bronco and Bronco Sport offer impressively equipped trim levels. However, there are several significant differences to consider:

  • The Bronco Sport comes standard with Ford Co-Pilot360™ driver aids, including collision mitigation, blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, lane keeping, and automatic high beams. Since many off-road enthusiasts prioritize a more accessible price tag over advanced safety technologies, the Bronco SUV puts these technologies in an optional package. While both models received the highest possible marks in IIHS crash evaluations, the Bronco Sport's standard safety features earned it a Top Safety Pick+ rating.

  • All Bronco Sport models have an 8-inch SYNC 3 touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Outer Banks and higher trims also get a 6.5-inch LCD Instrument Panel. The Ford Bronco comes standard with Ford's next-gen SYNC 4 system, wireless smartphone integration, and an 8-inch digital gauge cluster. An available High Package upgrades the 8-inch touchscreen to a larger 12-inch display.

  • While the base Ford Bronco starts with all-season tires, all higher tiers get all-terrain tires. The Bronco Sport reserves all-terrain rubber for the top-tier Badlands trim.

  • Both models have an available 180-degree front trail camera. However, the Ford Bronco also offers a 360-degree surround-view system.

  • Because the Bronco Sport is primarily focused on being a great daily driver, its levels are more amenity-focused. Many features that are standard in a Bronco Sport trim are bundled in packages for the Bronco. Examples include dual-zone automatic climate control, heated seats, remote start, proximity entry, ambient lighting, and more.
