For businesses planning to replace an aging work truck or expand their fleet, purchasing a vehicle can represent a substantial expense. Fortunately, Section 179 of the IRS tax code may help offset that investment by allowing eligible businesses to deduct qualifying vehicle costs during the year the vehicle is purchased and placed into service.

At Ciocca Ford of Flemington, we help local businesses explore Ford trucks and commercial vans that may qualify for Section 179 tax benefits.

How Does Section 179 Work for Ford Vehicles?

Section 179 allows businesses to deduct up to $2,560,000 in qualifying property purchases for the 2026 tax year, with the deduction beginning to phase out when total qualifying purchases exceed $4,090,000.

There are some provisions to keep in mind, including the requirement for the vehicle to be used for business purposes more than 50% of the time. As the year winds down, perhaps the most important consideration is timing. Businesses have until December 31 to purchase a vehicle and have it ready for work. Simply ordering a vehicle or making a down payment before the deadline isn't sufficient.

Vehicle weight and configuration also affect the deduction amount. Commercial trucks and vans with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) above 6,000 pounds often qualify for more favorable treatment than lighter passenger vehicles.

Ford Trucks and Vans for Business Use

The Ford lineup includes several vehicles that may qualify for Section 179, depending on their specifications and intended use. For example, a construction business in Hillsborough might benefit from the towing and payload capabilities of a Ford Super Duty truck. A delivery company in Princeton, meanwhile, may find that the closed cargo space of a Ford Transit van better suits its transportation requirements.

Other possibilities include qualifying Ford F-150 configurations, Ford Transit cutaway and chassis cab models, and the all-electric Ford E-Transit.
